The Sonata is a sedan that is manufactured and sold by Hyundai Motor America, a division of the original Korean car manufacturing company, Hyundai. Hyundai boasts that the Sonata is both excellent in performance and safety. Just as with any other vehicle, however, the Sonata may have trouble starting at times. When this occurs, there are a few things that you can check before calling a mechanic or having your Sonata towed. These troubleshooting checks will save you time and money in the long run.
Step 1
Place the key in the ignition switch of your Sonata and try to turn it. If the key is stuck and will not turn at all, there are a couple of things to check. If the steering column is not in the correct position, the key will not turn. Turn the steering wheel to the left and right until it clicks into position, then try to turn the key again.
Step 2
Check the fuel gauge with the key in the "Accessories" position. If the gauge shows low fuel or a fuel warning light is on, there may not be enough gas in your Sonata for the engine to start. Add one gallon of gas to the tank. If the gauge is not working or you are unsure how much fuel is in the vehicle, add one gallon of gas to be sure. Try to start the engine again.
Step 3
Leave the key in the "Accessories" position and check the battery of your Hyundai Sonata. Do this by turning on the exterior headlights or interior lights. If the lights do not illuminate, there is likely a problem with the battery. The battery may need to be replaced, but oftentimes the engine can be jump-started or the battery recharged.
Step 4
Locate the lever that releases the hood, and pull it. Walk to the front of your Sonata and open the hood. Check that oil, transmission fluid and coolant levels are sufficient. An absence of fluid or low fluid can cause engine problems in the Sonata. Locate the dipsticks and pull each one out, checking to be sure that they are above the minimum fill line.
Step 5
Try to start the engine of your vehicle and listen for any sounds that may give you a clue as to the reason it won't start. Turn the key to the "Start" position. If you hear nothing at all, suspect a faulty ignition switch. If you hear clicking sounds but not engine noises, there may be a problem with the Sonata's starter. If you do hear engine noises but the engine does not start or run smoothly, a problem with the fueling system is possible.
Call or contact a towing company or roadside assistance to have your car towed to a professional mechanic or dealership. The Hyundai dealership should be able to diagnose and repair any problems that you may have with your Sonata.
