V6 gone, new variants, on sale October 6
Pricing and specifications for the updated2018 Toyota HiLux range have been detailed ahead of an October 6 on-sale date, bringing a revised model line-up including new variants, small price increases, and the axing of the slow-selling 4.0-litre V6 engine.
Just days after the company hinted at upcoming changes, ten new variants replace 10 low-volume versions of the outgoing model - the latter 10 including all V6 variants, which Toyota says only accounted for 0.5 per cent of HiLux sales.
SR double-cab pick-up models can now be optioned with satellite navigation and alloy wheels for $2000, meaning buyers don't have to step up to the flagship SR5 grade for those features.
Additional changes include downhill assist control, PVC flooring and black door handles for SR 4x4 double cab variants, along with LED fog lights for the SR5. The SR extra cab pick-up and SR5 models also gain a tailgate lock.
"We are determined to ensure a strong final quarter in 2017; but these moves are not about short-term gains, they are the result of detailed analysis of buyer trends and feedback from dealers over the past two years," said Tony Cramb, executive director of marketing and sales for Toyota Australia.
"It is clear that HiLux buyers increasingly want the convenience of an automatic transmission, so we now offer 17 self-shifters compared with 12 previously."
"Last year - for the first time - automatics accounted for more than half of all HiLux sales and this year the proportion has risen to almost 60 per cent and we expect it to increase further," he added.
Three engines are offered; one petrol and two diesel. First off the rank is a122kW/245Nm 2.7-litre naturally aspirated petrol available in 4x2 WorkMate single and double cabs.
Second is the 2.4-litre turbo-diesel offered on Workmate models, developing 110kW of power, along with343Nm in 4x2 manual single/double cabs or400Nm (man/auto) in 4x2 WorkMate automatic and all 4x4 versions.
Finally, there's the range-topping2.8-litre turbo-diesel with 130kW of power and 420Nm/450Nm (man/auto) of torque. The larger diesel is available with Hi-Rider and 4x4 models.
